How to replace your
motorcycle’s spark plugs
Spark plugs come in various types and sizes, and it is essential that the
correct plug, as specified by the manufacturer of your bike and given in
your manual or handbook, is used. You need one plug (or two on dualspark systems) for each cylinder your bike engine has. Once you have
the plugs, make sure you have the correct size of plug socket. The toolkit
supplied with the bike may contain the necessary tools, but the quality is
usually poor, so it is best to use your own tools.
Make sure the engine is cool
before you start, and that the
ignition switch is turned off. On
some bikes the plug or plugs are
exposed and easy to get at, but on
others you will need to refer to
your manual or handbook to find
out what components must be
removed first.
