Fitting new brake pads
Why do you need to fit new brake pads?
Brake pads wear down with use, and the harder you ride the faster they
will wear. Pads come with wear limit indicators on them, and you must
regularly check them so they are replaced as soon as, if not before,
the limit is reached. Sometimes
the indicators are difficult to see,
either because of their position or
because they are covered in dirt,
but you should always be able to
tell how much friction material is
left, and anything less than 1 mm is
not enough.
Check your brake caliper
There are many types of caliper, each with their own way of retaining
the pads - have a good look at the caliper on your bike to determine how
the pads fit. For specific details refer to the Haynes manual for your bike.
Calipers contain two pads, one on each side of the disc, and in some
cases there’s a pad for each piston in the caliper. On a twin front disc
set-up, remember that you need to fit new pads in both calipers.
