How to remove your motorcycle’s old oil filter
The oil is filtered either by an external spin-on filter that threads onto a
boss on the engine, or by a filter element that is housed within the engine.
In both cases the filter is discarded and a new one is fitted – it is not possible
to clean and re-use a filter. Some engines may require the removal and
cleaning or replacement of a gauze strainer, and a few have a centrifugal
filter that must be cleaned. Your manual will detail the specifics.
To remove a spin-on filter you
need a filter socket, or a filter strap.
There are many different types
available, but the best type is the
socket because you can also use
it to tighten the new filter to the
correct torque – you shouldn’t use
a strap type tool to tighten a filter.
Place the container under the filter,
unscrew it and tip out the residual
oil. To remove a filter element, take
off the filter cover, then draw out
the element. The same applies to a
strainer, and if this is being reused
the gauze must be cleaned to
remove all debris caught in it.
