usually every time the oil is changed, or at least with every alternate oil
change, again in accordance with the maintenance schedule.
The type of oil you put in is of equal importance to how often it is changed.
Good-quality engine oil is not cheap, but using anything other than the
type and grade specified by the manufacturer is a false economy.
Engines have different ways of storing, filtering and draining the oil, so
refer to your Haynes manual for the specific procedure and component
locations.
On most engines the oil is stored in the sump at the bottom of the
engine, but on some it is held in a remote oil tank. Each of these has a
drain plug at the lowest point, but note that most engines with a remote
tank will also have a drain plug in the bottom of the crankcase. First
remove any components as required to access them. The plug will have
a sealing washer fitted with it, and a new washer must be used when the
plug is refitted.
