Methods of brake
bleeding
There are a couple of ways to bleed your motorcycle’s brakes. For
both you’ll need some brake fluid of the type specified in your manual
or handbook – it’s best to buy a new bottle. You’ll also require a ring
spanner to fit the hex on the brake caliper bleed valve.
By far the easiest method is to use a brake bleeding kit. These are
inexpensive and greatly speed up the operation. The kit contains a hose
to fit the bleed valve, a check valve to prevent aerated fluid flowing back
in the system and in some cases a reservoir bottle to catch the old fluid.
The fluid reservoir for the front brake is on the handlebar, and that for the
rear brake is usually on the right-hand side of the bike, but you may need to
remove some bodywork to access it, so refer to your manual or handbook
for details. Brake fluid attacks painted finishes and some plastics, so wrap
some rag around the reservoir to catch spills and cover over adjacent
painted components. If you do spill any fluid, clean it away immediately.
